The Charm of Gunma: A Prefecture Where Women Thrive

In Japan, there's an old saying, "kakaa tenka," which often brings to mind the image of "strong women" who hold sway over their husbands. But in fact, this phrase originally meant "hardworking women." Gunma (once known as Joshu) has a rich history of silk production, where women played essential roles in sericulture, silk reeling, and weaving, significantly contributing to their family’s livelihood. These women worked as silk reelers and weavers, and husbands would proudly say, "My wife is the best in the world!"—a sentiment that became the well-known "kakaa tenka." Today, it symbolizes women who excel both inside and outside the home.

In Gunma, the importance of women’s contributions continued into the Meiji period. Raw silk produced at the Tomioka Silk Mill and other mechanized factories became a major export to Europe, leading to the modernization of Japan’s industry. Gunma established itself as a leader in Japan's silk industry, with women at the forefront of this success.
