The Charm of Gunma: The Birthplace of Iconic Onsen Gourmet Treats
Gunma Prefecture, Japan, is a haven for hot spring enthusiasts, boasting over 100 unique onsen locations! From the renowned Kusatsu, Ikaho, Minakami, and Shima Onsens to hidden gems nestled in the mountains or along rivers, Gunma offers diverse and unforgettable onsen experiences steeped in over 1,000 years of history.
Did you know that the famous “Onsen Manju” (hot spring steamed buns), sold across Japan, originated in Gunma? Ikaho Onsen is credited as the birthplace of this delightful treat. Back in 1910 (Meiji 43), a local confectionery in Ikaho created the first “Yunohana Manju,” inspired by the golden hues of Ikaho's hot springs. This humble creation gained nationwide fame in 1934 (Showa 9) when Emperor Showa purchased a large quantity, sparking its popularity in hot spring towns across the country.
Today, Onsen Manju remains an iconic Japanese onsen gourmet, loved by locals and tourists alike. And it all started in Gunma!
