Gunma is home to the Tone River, Japan's largest by drainage area, and many hydroelectric power stations. The prefecture operates 32 public hydroelectric plants, the most in Japan.

With one of Japan's highest annual sunshine hours, Gunma is perfect for solar energy. As of 2017, 147 megasolar facilities are in operation.
